Happy Pride, Ohio Democrats!
This is State Senator and Assistant Minority Leader, Nickie J. Antonio. I've served in the Ohio General Assembly since 2011, and I'm proud to be the first lesbian legislator (LGBTQ+ community member) elected to the Ohio House and now Senate.
As a former special education teacher, adjunct professor, and non-profit administrator, I first decided to run for office in 2005 to help everyone in my community. Then in 2011, I took my fight for equality, the middle class, and women's reproductive justice to the General Assembly. And since my first election, I've opposed any legislation that would harm members of our LGBTQ+ community because LGBTQ+ rights are human rights.
Here's the thing -- seems like 2011 is not that long ago. Every day we are making and living the history that folks will celebrate during Pride Month years from now. We've made a lot of progress for LGBTQ+ Americans, but not nearly enough.
Right now, young trans people are under attack by right-wing hate-mongers across the country -- including in Ohio. The Equality Act, which would give people in my community, full legal equality under the law, is stalled because of Senate Republicans. And studies show 40% of all young people experiencing homelessness are LGBTQ+. Clearly, there is much work to do.
I'm going to keep fighting every day for all Ohio families, including our transgender kids, my wife and our two daughters, to make the world a better place for us all. I hope you'll join me in that fight.
This month, no matter who you're celebrating -- yourself, a friend, a family member, or a loved one -- I hope you'll join me in taking a moment to see how far our country has come and to remember that the fight for equality is still happening today.
Thank you,
Senator Nickie J. Antonio
