Friends - It has been three full months since I voted Yes on H.R. 1 — the For the People Act. The House passed this landmark piece of voting rights legislation and sent it to the Senate, where it has been sitting under attack by Mitch McConnell since March. In the meantime, Republican officials across the country continue to undermine confidence in our electoral process, sowing misinformation and doubt as a way to threaten our democracy. In the 2021 legislative sessions, Republicans in 48 states introduced over 380 voter suppression bills aimed at restricting mail-in ballots, early voting, voter registration, election security, and so much more. The For the People Act would stop them in their tracks. I’m going to explain further in just a moment, but if you’re ready to say you support the For the People Act now, please add your name to my petition in support of Senate Democrats passing this critical legislation and protecting our democracy. Here’s why this is so important, friends. The For the People Act would significantly expand access to the ballot, protect voting rights, strengthen our election security, and address serious issues with our campaign finance system. It would require states to enact early voting and same-day registration, and put an end to gerrymandering and partisan manipulation of Congressional districts. It would create a public financing system to make small donors a more powerful force in federal campaigns. It would shine a light on the dark money in our political system by increasing transparency and requiring outside groups like super PACs to disclose their top donors in political advertising. Republican officials around the country are using their voter suppression efforts as a blueprint to undermine future elections and will continue to do so unless we act now. We need greater access to the ballot, not less, and more voices in our politics, not fewer. We need elections to be about who has the best ideas and who can get more people to support them, not who can best suppress the vote to advantage their side. Our democracy is on the ropes. Passing this bill is our best chance at saving it. That’s why I’m asking you today: Signing the For the People Act into law would mean a stronger and more inclusive democracy. Voting rights legislation is long overdue, and it’s time to get it done. Thank you, Peter Welch
