Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg (third from right) stopped at Feeding Chittenden, the largest food pantry in Vermont, this week as part of his journey across the country meeting with those working on the front lines of hunger.

Hunger Free America CEO Joel Berg kicked off his 8,000 mile journey this week, starting at our Bronx, NY office and traveling up to Albany, to Burlington, Vermont, and then to Western Massachusetts. He was greeted by hunger relief organizations across New York and New England including The Food Pantries for the Capital District in Albany, the South Burlington Food Shelf, Feeding Chittenden in Burlington, Vermont, and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, where he met with U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern. Throughout the summer, Joel will continue to meet with those working on the front lines of hunger as well as elected officials to advocate for the policies and programs needed to permanently end hunger.

Closing the Summer Hunger Gap for Kids
|
|
During the school year, more than 30 million children rely on free and reduced-price school meals to stay well-fed, healthy, and ready to learn. But once the final school bell rings, access to school meals abruptly ends and only 1 in 7 eligible children receive summer meals. That’s why HFA is mobilizing our national network of AmeriCorps VISTA members and volunteers this summer to make sure that every family takes advantage of the Summer-EBT program as well as federally-funded meals, which are available at sites like schools, parks, public pools, and day camps.

Join Joel on his journey this summer, and take the pledge to end hunger in America. Our comprehensive public policy agenda addresses the root causes of hunger like low wages, unaffordable housing, and an insufficient nutrition safety net. By implementing policies like living wage jobs, universally free school meals, and an expansion of SNAP (formerly called food stamps), our country will be on a sure path to a hunger-free future.

At HFA, we believe that social justice is intrinsically tied to food justice and the fight against hunger. Unfortunately, food insecurity is all too prevalent among the LGBTQ+ community due to a number of factors such as workplace discrimination. We must work to change this! In order to create an equal and just society for all, we must lift up all communities and make sure that those who are most vulnerable to poverty and hunger receive the resources they need to thrive such as SNAP. Be sure to follow our Instagram to learn about upcoming Pride Month events that address the intersection of food justice and social justice for the LGBTQ+ community.
