Dear Friend,
Happy Pride Month!
The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) stands with LGBTQ+ Americans, knowing the importance of having the freedom and rights to live your full true self. As we enter Pride Month, we are reminded that so many issues and causes that matter to the secular community are in coalition with other groups and communities. This is especially true of the LGBTQ+ community, who have historically faced a denial of their civil rights under the guise of "religious liberty/freedom".
There have been many momentous victories over the years, but there is a lot of work ahead. Right now, our Coalition is actively lobbying Congress and the Biden Administration to pass the Equality Ac ([link removed]) t ([link removed]) , the Do No Harm Act ([link removed]) , and the Every Child Deserves a Family Act ([link removed]) . All of these bills would protect Americans from being denied their civil rights on the basis of religious exemption to civil laws.
SCA is also closely monitoring the much anticipated Supreme Court decision on Fulton v the City of Philadelphia ([link removed]) , which could allow government contractors, such as religiously-affiliated foster agencies, to engage in discrimination justified by religious beliefs. For more information on the case, check out this great resource from GLAAD ([link removed]) (while targeted towards journalists, the guide is beneficial for all citizens). Also, don't forget to register for Decision Day ([link removed]) , a national event SCA is co-sponsoring that will feature a virtual rally and town hall when a decision on Fulton is released!
The team at the Secular Coalition for America ([link removed]) is hard at work advocating on your behalf here in Washington D.C, but outside of our nation's capital, our 20 member organizations ([link removed]) are doing amazing things across the country. We'd like to share with you what some are up to and how you can participate!
ICYMI: SCA has a new member organization!
We wanted to be sure you saw the big news; The Clergy Project ([link removed]) has joined the Secular Coalition for America as its 20th member organization! The Clergy Project, now its 11th year, provides support, community, and hope to current and former religious professionals who no longer hold supernatural beliefs. SCA's Executive Director, Debbie Allen, had the following to say on the good news:
“I am delighted to welcome The Clergy Project to our ever expanding coalition that is committed to increasing the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the US. Post-belief clergy provide unique and important perspectives and experiences on issues affecting millions of Americans. Our Coalition will be made stronger by having them as a member”
