You may have seen this in the news, John:

“After defeating restrictive voting bill, Texas Democrats send loud message: ‘We need Congress to do their part’” -- The Washington Post

Faced with the passage of a bill that would restrict voting and make it easier to overturn election results, Democrats in the Texas House walked out of the chamber, denying Republicans a quorum and leading to the failure of the bill. It was a bold and important move in defense of democracy -- but it won't be enough on its own.

That's because voting rights are under attack all over the country, not just in Texas (and in fact, the Texas bill is expected to get another chance later this year). It's clear that we need a national strategy to prevent voter suppression, gerrymandering, and other democracy-undermining practices in Texas and states across the country.

Like Texas Democrats, we're calling on the Senate to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act -- but we need voters from around the country backing us up. Will you add your name to our petition to show that you're with us?

Listen, John: Republican attacks on democracy are an existential threat. Just this week, 100 leading scholars of democracy signed an open letter stating that the GOP's initiatives are “transforming several states into political systems that no longer meet the minimum conditions for free and fair elections.” They pointed out that Republicans are making arguments about ensuring the “purity” and “quality” of the vote, echoing language widely used during the Jim Crow era.

In this context it's CRITICAL that federal legislators take action to protect our elections, and that they do it NOW. The For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are must-pass bills.

Texas Democrats are pleading with Congress to pass this legislation -- one representative even said their walkout was “the equivalent of crawling on our knees begging.” We have to add our voices to theirs and DEMAND that Congress act to save our democracy.

Will you add your name?
