Revive Animal Welfare Standards in the Organic Program!

Dear John,

In 2018, the Trump administration withdrew a regulation meant to establish welfare standards for animals on organic farms. Among the improvements that would have been established under the regulation, a loophole allowing producers to deny actual access to the outdoors to egg-laying hens was closed. The rule would have also established maximum stocking densities for avian species, and provided protections for non-ambulatory livestock.

Consumers are under the impression that these basic standards are already provided for animals raised under the USDA Organic program. It is highly likely that many consumers who choose organic do so in part because they believe the products are not only healthier for them, but also better for animals. It is important that the standards meet these expectations.

What You Can Do
Please send a letter ([link removed]) to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack asking that he reinstate the organic rule and protect animal welfare on the nation's organic farms.

Be sure to share our alert with family, friends, and co-workers, and encourage them to contact Secretary Vilsack too. As always, thank you very much for your help!

Sincerely,

Cathy Liss
President
