This June, we honor the work that’s come before, and the work that lies ahead.
Happy Pride Month, friend!
This June and beyond, we honor the LBGTQ+ community and this country’s hard-fought (and still continuing!) march toward full equality. Here at DAGA, our position has always been: Love is love is love is love.
And as the People’s Lawyers, the Democratic Attorneys General will tell you: Justice is justice is justice is justice.
There’s still so much work to be done in upholding every person’s right to be who they are, and love who they love, free of legal and institutional discrimination. And Dem AGs are dedicated to leading the way in their communities.
To be honest, I am constantly in awe of the decades of activism and political courage that is the base of the progress we’ve made in recent years.
Not even a decade ago, it would be hard to imagine a world where marriage equality is the law of the land, where the Supreme Court prohibits workplace discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, and where we have LGBTQ+ leaders in cabinet positions and statewide office (including our very own history-making Dem AGs Maura Healey and Dana Nessel!).
I’m filled with hope for what comes next and gratitude for what others have accomplished before – but I also know that progress can be fragile, and LGBTQ+ rights are still very much in danger.
Already, Republicans are circling in, flush with dark money, to kill the Equality Act, a landmark anti-discrimination law four decades in the making.
Right now, it’s languishing in the Senate thanks to a sprawling dark money operation with direct ties to several Republican AGs, state lawmakers, and the DeVos family. These Republican AGs are serving as “allied attorneys” of a legal interest group that’s devoted to stopping the Equality Act.
And several Republican AGs have been part of the recent attacks on the rights of trans children – including the newly appointed Chair of the Republican AG Association.
