Hello, Here’s the deal: We’ve got to abolish the filibuster. Even though Democrats have the Senate majority, we can’t yet use it to pass bills that would help New Mexico’s workers and families. And it’s all because of an antiquated Senate rule that requires 60 votes to end debate on a bill and move it to the floor for a vote. The Republican minority is abusing this rule to stop Democrats from passing critical legislation, including the bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection on our Capitol on January 6th.
The filibuster is the only tool Republicans have to block our progress and delay bills like the For the People Act, which is scheduled to be voted on this month and would set a national standard for voting rights — preventing states from enacting racist voter suppression laws like the ones advancing in Republican state legislatures across the country. On top of that, Mitch McConnell has vowed to stop our progress at every turn and will undoubtedly use the filibuster to stop Democrats from moving forward legislation to take on climate change, expand workers’ rights, raise the minimum wage, and create millions of clean energy jobs. That’s why we must abolish the filibuster once and for all. Please sign the petition if you agree:
U.S. Senators are elected to make progress — not block it. Thank you for joining me in demanding that we end this archaic rule and pass the legislation New Mexicans voted me in to move forward. — Martin |
