Law Enforcement News 17 Cities Vote No Confidence In DA George Gascón Seventeen cities have now issued votes of "no confidence" in Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón and the list of cities opposed to his reform policies continues to grow. At the San Gabriel City Council meeting, which didn’t end until after midnight on Tuesday, there were over 100 letters in support of the "no confidence" vote and only five against it. The "no confidence" vote passed by a 4-1 vote. San Gabriel joins Santa Clarita, Beverly Hills, Pico Rivera, Whitter, La Mirada, Covina, Rosemead, Azusa, Santa Fe Springs, Diamond Bar, Redondo Beach, Arcadia, Manhattan Beach, Temple City, Palos Verdes Estates and Lancaster, which have all issued votes of "no confidence" in the elected DA. An effort to recall Gascón recently began public circulation after the Los Angeles County registrar gave the "Recall George Gascón" campaign's petition the green light to go out to the general public. Gascón has vowed to put an end to the death penalty in LA County, trying juveniles as adults and eliminate all special enhancement allegations, which would make about 20,000 inmates eligible for re-sentencing consideration. Campaign officials said they need about 590,000 signatures from registered Los Angeles County voters within a 160-day period to trigger a recall election. FOX 11 A Killer Shadows An L.A. Homeless Camp. ‘Some People Work For The Devil’ Before the two detectives even sat down, Tracy Walker was talking. In the interview room at the Carson sheriff’s station, he asked whether the coroner had run tests yet on a knife found in his tent. A man’s body had been discovered a few days earlier near a small homeless encampment where Walker was living. Walker had been arrested on suspicion of killing the man, but he insisted the weapon hadn’t been used in the slaying. But Daniel Machuca and Gustavo Carrillo, homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, were there to ask Walker about another body that had been discovered in the same area eight months earlier. They showed him a photograph of a young Latina with close-cropped hair. Walker knew her. He told the detectives he’d caught the woman in his tent, stealing his belongings, and had given her a “serious response,” according to court records. The woman, Walker said, had been the “first one.” Los Angeles Times Security Guard Severely Beaten By Homeless Individual At Arbor Collective Thursday A security guard is in the emergency room Thursday after being severely beaten in the parking lot of Arbor Collective located at 102 Washington Blvd, according to the business owner Bob Carlson. Carlson said his guard, "T", who is well-loved by employees and the community, was asking a person experiencing homelessness to leave the company parking lot after observing they were under the influence. The homeless person then took a bottle and hit "T" over his head, breaking the bottle, according to Carlson. Carlson said the person then stabbed "T" multiple times in the head and torso with the broken bottle. "There was blood everywhere," said Carlson. "Here's a place where we do our best to keep our business safe for children and families. This situation is unimaginable." Carlson said after the struggle, "T" was able to subdue the homeless individual before stumbling away. The suspect then left the parking lot. Carlson said members of his staff, who witnessed the attack, followed the suspect until police arrived. "We are on our own. We are alone in dealing with violent people who can kill you and there is nobody who is going to save you. If that had been one of my employees in our parking lot--that person would be dead," said Carlson. Carlson said that even thought his business is global, Venice is the only place they have to hire a professional guard to ensure safety for employees and customers. "We don't know how much longer we can stay when our staff are being assaulted." "We want to be a part of solutions, but we have welcomed dangerous people to Venice. Mike Bonin has refused to let our police enforce the laws." The Los Angeles Police Department said the suspect is being held on bail. Venice Current 1 Killed, 1 Wounded, In Shooting At South L.A. Gas Station; Assailant Sought One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting at a gas station in the Vermont-Slauson neighborhood of South Los Angeles Thursday morning. The gunfire was reported shortly before 3 a.m. near the intersection of South Figueroa Street and West Gage Avenue, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said. Arriving officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds down at the scene, the spokesperson said. One of the victims, described only as a 35-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, a man between 25 and 30 years old, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting and no suspect description was immediately available. Witnesses did report seeing a black SUV leaving the scene, the spokesperson said. The incident appeared to be gang related, LAPD Officer Lee said. KTLA 5 Man Arrested In Connection With Vandalism Of West L.A. Synagogue A man has been arrested in connection with a series of vandalisms in West L.A., including at a Pico-Robertson synagogue last month. Jon Knight Prince was arrested Thursday on suspicion of committing 13 acts of vandalism on Westwood and Pico boulevards between May 26 and Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department said. He was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and was being held on $325,000 bail. The department did not specify how many counts of vandalism Prince faced. It was not immediately clear who was representing him. Officials said Prince threw bricks, rocks or hard objects at the windows of buildings. LAPD spokesman Tony Im confirmed that one of the incidents involved the vandalism of Young Israel of Century City synagogue on Pico Boulevard. Security camera footage released to the media by the synagogue showed a man throwing a concrete slab at the building about 1 a.m. Friday. The synagogue’s shatterproof windows stopped the slab from breaking the glass. The man tried a second time to throw the concrete at the building, then rushed off. The vandal was also suspected of tossing concrete at Pat’s, a kosher steakhouse nearby, and shattering a window there. Im said he could not confirm whether Prince had been arrested in relation to that incident or whether officials were investigating the incident at the synagogue as a hate crime. Los Angeles Times LA County Sheriff’s Department Seeks Public Assistance In Locating 26-Year-Old Dulce Ivette “Candy” Huante The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sought public assistance Thursday to locate a missing 26-year-old woman last seen in Granada Hills earlier this year. Dulce Ivette Huante, also known by the nickname “Candy,” was last seen around noon on Jan. 26 in the 10900 block of Paso Robles Avenue, according to a statement released by the LASD. Huante is Hispanic, 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighing 183 pounds, with brown and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing gray sweats, a blue-and-black striped shirt and brown boots. CBS 2 Culver City Releases Video Of May Burglary In Hopes Of Identifying 2 Suspects The Culver City Police Department Thursday released security video from a May 9 burglary in hopes that someone would be able to identify the two suspects. According to police, the burglars targeted an apartment building in the 6200 block of Buckingham Parkway at about 4:05 a.m. and stole an estimated $3,000 in tools — including what appeared to be a leaf blower — from the complex. CBS 2 16-Year-Old Killed; Pomona Father, Stepmother Arrested In Connection With His Murder A 16-year-old boy is dead and his father and stepmother were arrested in connection with his death, Pomona police said Thursday. The teen, later identified as George Almaraz Jr., was killed on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Del Rosa Place, authorities said. The exact cause of the teen's death was not immediately available, but authorities believe the teen's stepmother caused injuries that resulted in his death. Police responded to call of unknown trouble with someone requiring CPR. When first responders arrived at the scene, the victim was found not breathing. The teen was transported to the hospital where he died a short time later. Authorities determined that the victim had been assaulted by his stepmother immediately prior to needing medical assistance. Investigators also learned that the victim had been receiving significant injuries from abuse at the hands of the suspect prior to this incident. The victim’s stepmother, Jessica Grajeda, 35, was taken into custody by Pomona detectives. The investigation further revealed that the victim’s father was aware of the abuse and injuries and had not taken action to stop it or seek medical attention for his son. The father, George Luis Almaraz Sr., was also taken into custody by detectives. FOX 11 Man Suspected Of Shooting, Injuring 3 Wilmington Officers Found Dead After Standoff Officials in Wilmington say a 31-year-old man who allegedly shot three police officers during a domestic dispute barricaded himself inside an apartment for several hours before turning the gun on himself. Officers from the Wilmington Police Department were called to the 2400 block of North Market Street around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night for reports of a domestic dispute in progress. When police approached the apartment, officials say Bernard Goodwyn of Smyrna shot three officers. The officers were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. One of the officers has since been released from the hospital. A large contingent of law enforcement agencies swarmed the apartment building for about 12 hours to try to convince Goodwyn to surrender. A large spotlight was focused on the third-floor apartment near the backside of the building overnight. The Wilmington Police Department lifted the shelter in place just before 11 a.m. Officers eventually entered the apartment and found Goodwyn dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to an update from the Wilmington Police Department. FOX 11 North Carolina Deputy Recovering After Being Shot While Serving Eviction Notice The Raleigh man charged with shooting a sheriff's deputy with an AK-47 struggled with mental health issues and was largely estranged from his family, his mother said Thursday. Neighbors in his apartment complex reported he survived on several jobs until the pandemic put him out of work. Eddie D. Craig, 32, is in the Wake County jail on attempted murder and other charges, accused of shooting Wake Sheriff Sgt. Ronald Waller as he tried to serve an eviction notice Wednesday. Waller, a 20-year veteran of the sheriff's office, underwent surgery at WakeMed Wednesday and started what spokesman Eric Curry called "a long road to recovery." He had the second of what will likely be three surgeries Thursday. Raleigh police released a 911 recording of an unidentified man who called the shooting "a terrible accident" over an eviction that came too early. The caller then asks the dispatcher to tell officers the shooter would surrender peacefully. "He tried to kick the door in, um, uh, and shots got fired," the caller said. The News & Observer 'A Horrible, Horrible Thing': How Police Train For ‘Suicide By Cop' Situations On May 11, David Roberts helped save a man's life. The Marion County Sheriff's captain responded to a home on Woodrow Avenue on the west side of Indianapolis where police were attempting to serve a warrant on a man charged with resisting police and intimidation with a deadly weapon. The man had barricaded himself inside the home and police suspected he was in the middle of a mental health crisis. Roberts, a crisis intervention training instructor since 2015, was called to help. Roberts said he made contact with the man who was armed with two knives. The pair talked for around two hours. "And at certain points throughout the conversation, he had one knife up to the throat, and sometimes two knives up to the throat." The man bounced between "manic" and "depressed." Using patience and empathy, Roberts said he was able to build a rapport with the man and convince him to surrender peacefully. "Those are success stories that we love to hear," Roberts said. "Unfortunately, not every situation turns out that way." Encounters between police and a person experiencing a mental health crisis sometimes end with officers using deadly force. And in some cases, there's reason to believe the person intended to commit "suicide by cop" by acting in a way that prompts police to shoot them. Indy Star Public Safety News L.A. County Mass COVID-19 Vaccination Sites To Be Replaced By Smaller Ones This Month Amid a decline in demand for the COVID-19 vaccine, Los Angeles County will soon close four large-scale vaccination sites and replace them with smaller ones, officials said Thursday. On Monday, the county will close the Cal State Northridge site. People who received their first dose there have appointments to get their second dose at the nearby Balboa Sports Complex. The county will be offering free transportation services to residents who need a ride to the complex; to use the service, call the county Department of Public Health at (833) 540-0473. The vaccination sites at the Forum in Inglewood, Pomona Fairplex and the L.A. County Office of Education will close after June 13. Starting June 15, officials said, residents can instead go to vaccination sites at Ted Watkins Memorial Park in South L.A., the Commerce Senior Citizens Center or the Norwalk Arts & Sports Complex.
