There's a famous story about Senator Patty Murray. Long before she was a senator she was a citizen advocate for education and the environment in Washington State. One day a male state legislator made the mistake of telling her she couldn’t make a difference because she was just "a mom in tennis shoes."

That line stuck, but not the way he intended. Patty decided to run for public office (using the "mom in tennis shoes" line as a campaign slogan) and eventually went on to become the first woman to represent Washington in the U.S. Senate. When I was elected she was there to show me the ropes, and she's been a consistent leader not just on education and the environment but on so many issues, from defending reproductive rights to protecting workers to fighting for affordable health care.

I can't overstate how important Patty is to the Senate and to our Democratic caucus. Over the years she's championed policies that will strengthen our economy and support working families, like raising the minimum wage, expanding paid leave and more.
