Happy Pride Month, John!
Each year, we commemorate Pride month not just by reflecting on our progress, but by remembering the first Pride: a protest against brutality, hatred, and intolerance. That's especially poignant this year.
Right now, twenty-seven states have no laws that explicitly protect the LGBTQ+ community against discrimination. And in recent years, we've seen a rise in hateful, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation passed across the country, including 117 bills across 30 states in 2021 alone. Many of these bills specifically target transgender minors, threaten their safety, and set back the clock on progress.
We cannot accept hate, intolerance, homophobia, or transphobia in any form. Americans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are entitled to freedom, affirmation, love, support, and protection under the law. That's why I am a proud co-sponsor of the Equality Act.
The Equality Act is a civil rights bill that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity at the federal level. It would also expand existing civil rights and gender equality protections.
The LGBTQ+ community enriches Colorado and communities across the country. The legacy of the first Pride is a reminder that our country is not truly free until everyone is free. That's why we need to come together to make this country a better, safer place for all to live and thrive.
The Equality Act already passed the House this year, and I need your help to make sure it ends up on President Biden's desk. Sign on now to demand that the Senate pass the Equality Act.
Thank you,
Diana
