Dear John, Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and I'm proud to stand with gun safety organizations this #WearOrange weekend to demand a change. On any given day hundreds of Americans are the victims of gun violence, and even though mass shootings didn't capture all the headlines in 2020, it was still the deadliest gun violence year in more than two decades. Gun violence is a uniquely American tragedy: Americans are killed by guns at a rate 25 times higher than that of other high-income countries. It's also a racial justice issue, too: Black Americans and other Americans of color are disproportionately harmed by the gun violence epidemic. For all these reasons and more: it's clear we need to take action to stop gun violence. Thoughts and prayers are not enough -- we need to respond to these tragedies with action. That's why I'm committed to passing common-sense gun safety legislation such as the NICS Denial Notification Act and Background Check Expansion Act. I was proud to reintroduce both of these bills earlier this year and stand with the 93% of Americans who support expanding background checks. On National Gun Violence Awareness Day will you join the growing number of Americans fighting to stop the gun violence epidemic? Add your name this #WearOrange weekend. Thank you, Chris |
