Hello,
Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the beginning of Wear Orange Weekend.
We wear orange to honor Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 -- just one week after performing at President Obama's second inaugural parade in 2013. These next few days are an important time to honor Hadiya and the countless other lives lost to gun violence and demand an end to the gun violence epidemic.
Derek is committed to doing everything he can to end the era of mass shootings and senseless gun violence tragedies. There have been too many heartbreaking moments of silence in the Halls of Congress and not nearly enough moments of action. That's why he and his colleagues in the House passed the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act earlier this year.
On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, will you stand with Derek in the fight to end gun violence? Add your name to show your support for common-sense gun safety legislation » [link removed]
Curbing the gun violence epidemic might seem like an impossible task, but a future free from gun violence is possible -- we just need to fight for it. Ninety-three percent of Americans support expanding background checks. This move alone could save countless lives.
Partisan obstruction and special interest lobbying have stood in the way of essential reforms passing in the Senate. This Wear Orange Weekend, let's show that the will of the people is stronger than any political game.
Join Derek in the fight against gun violence and add your name next to his before Wear Orange Weekend ends.
