John — The past year has seen renewed awareness about the systemic inequities that pervade our society. In the wake of the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, we need to work even harder to ensure that critical police reform is passed in this country.
The House has already acted. We passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act last year and again in 2021. It would institute a host of crucial reforms, including a ban on chokeholds, restrictions on no-knock warrants, and an end to qualified immunity for police officers — not to mention my effort to demilitarize the police.
While attention to police violence has been growing in recent years, people of color in this country have always known they face a different set of standards than white people. We’ve been waiting far too long for real change, and I won’t stop until it happens.
