I was raised primarily by a single parent, and let's be clear: raising a
child costs just as much for single parents as it does for families with
two or more parents or caregivers — sometimes even more. Under the current
Child Tax Credit, however, married parents get more help to provide their
children with food, childcare, housing, and health care.
It's time for our tax code to treat single and married families equally.
Failing to do so harms hundreds of thousands of single-parent households.
That's why I recently introduced the Single Parent Penalty Elimination Act
— in partnership with Congresswoman Katie Porter and Congressman Don Beyer
— to make it easier for single parents to access the critical relief they
need to survive this economic crisis and help their children thrive.

penalty by signing on as a grassroots co-sponsor of this transformative

This is an economic issue. It's a gender issue. And it's also a racial
justice issue — 81% of
single parent households are led by women and 66% percent of single parent
households are led by a Black parent.
We must reform our antiquated, culturally biased tax code to help deliver
a just and equitable recovery for our communities.

elimination of the single parent penalty?
