John,
Right now, undocumented New Yorkers are at imminent risk. Over the past 7 months, ICE deported over 35,000 people, separating them from their families and homes with little notice or regard for their rights or the well-being of their families. Despite promised reforms to immigration enforcement, thousands of New Yorkers live in daily fear of surveillance, detention, and deportation, making simple everyday chores like driving to a doctor’s appointment or going to the supermarket or taking their children to school stressful. It is critical that we take action now to help pass the New York for All Act to protect immigrant New Yorkers.
The New York for All Act would prohibit local law enforcement and state agencies from conspiring with ICE or participating in its cruelty. It would also protect people in custody by requiring that they be given notice of their rights before they are interviewed by ICE.
