National Review (6/1/21) reports: "President Biden pledged to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by at least 50 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels. An estimate shows that to reach this ambitious goal, at least half of the U.S. power supply would have to come from clean energy such as solar and wind. However, one dirty secret that President Biden and his green allies don’t want to talk about is how 'clean' solar energy is largely built on forced labor in Xinjiang, China, according to a new investigative report by U.K.’s Sheffield Hallam University. China dominates the global supply chain for solar power and is the leading exporter of solar panels and critical components for making solar panels. For instance, about 95 percent of solar modules rely on one mineral — solar-grade polysilicon, and China produces 80 percent of the world supply of polysilicon. Xinjiang alone is responsible for 45 percent of the world’s supply of polysilicon. Such a high level of production requires a significant supply of labor. The Sheffield Hallam University report, titled 'In Broad Daylight: Uyghur Forced Labor and Global Solar Supply Chains,' shows how China’s booming solar industry has been tainted by the forced labor of Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang. For example, U.K. researchers located an official Chinese government paper published in 2020 that acknowledged that the government had placed about 2.6 million minorities in farms and factories within Xinjiang and across China through state-sponsored 'surplus labor' and 'labor transfer' programs. Many minorities in these programs ended up working for Xinjiang’s growing solar industry."

Real Clear Energy (6/3/21) op-ed: "The strong recommendation from IEA isn’t as shocking as it might seem on the surface. The group’s funding from member nations and voluntary sources must be renewed every two years, with the latest funding cycle in 2021. To meet the resource needs of IEA the flow of dollars from Europe and the U.S. must steadily rise. Dr. Birol knows IEA must take a strong position on climate change. In that context, it makes a bit more sense that the agency chose to fall in behind John Kerry and company. Frankly it’s a move that threatens IEA’s reputation as a respected, independent agency."

Your daily reminder that neither the greens nor the Biden administration really believe that climate change is an existential threat to humanity.
 

CBS SF Bay Area (6/3/21) reports: "An extremely rare wildflower that grows only in Nevada’s high desert where an Australian mining company wants to dig for lithium should be protected under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Thursday. The agency outlined its intention to propose listing Tiehm’s buckwheat as a threatened or endangered species as part of its belated, 12-month review of a listing petition conservationists filed in 2019. A federal judge said last month the finding was six months overdue and ordered the agency to render a decision within weeks. The conclusion announced on Thursday that federal protection is warranted could jeopardize Ioneer Ltd.’s plans to build the mine halfway between Reno and Las Vegas."
