Parliamentary Diary

Dear Friend,

The Welsh vaccine rollout is the fastest in the WORLD. That's it. That's the headline.

What a remarkable achievement! I've seen first-hand the phenomenal pace of our vaccine rollout and I am so proud that Wales has become a global leader! Taking my 18 year old daughter to have her vaccination recently was when it really hit home as to how far we've come so soon!

And we owe it all to our fantastic NHS, volunteers, local Health Board and Welsh Government for their hard work and dedication.

And thanks to the team effort right across Wales to keep each other safe, Coronavirus cases remain stable here, giving the Welsh Government the headroom to ease restrictions further. From Monday, up to 30 people can meet outdoors and the numbers for organised outdoor activities and events will be increased. Things are looking positive, but we must remain vigilant and continue to be careful.

Here's an update on what I've been up to in Parliament and Cardiff North over the last couple of weeks. As ever, my team and I are here for you. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate get in touch with me on [email protected]. (mailto:[email protected])

With very best wishes,
Anna McMorrin MP

Anna joins the Shadow Justice Ministry

I'm delighted to have been appointed by Keir Starmer as the Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice. I’m looking forward to advocating for victims and young people as part of David Lammy’s team and holding the Tory Government to account on its shocking record on Justice.

I made my debut at the despatch box in my new role recently. The first duty of any Government is to protect and deliver justice for its citizens, but justice for women and girls is becoming ever more distant. Labour's Violence Against Women and Girls strategy ([link removed]) is ready to go. I asked the Minister to commit to implementing this strategy, but he and his Government chose further delay and inaction over protection and support for victims.
Trade Deal will decimate Welsh Farmers & Communities
I joined Politics Wales recently and urged the Tory Government to stop trading away the future of family farms and communities. The Australia Trade Deal is a rushed, botched job and will cause irreversible damage to Welsh Farmers and rural communities. The UK Government should be safeguarding the farming industry during this difficult time, not pulling the rug out from underneath it.

Celebrating Pride Month

Happy Pride Month to everyone in Cardiff North! Pride Month is about being united and working together towards a fairer, more equal society. Progress is not inevitable. I stand with LGBTQ+ people in Cardiff North, Wales and across the UK this month and every month!
Climate Change linked to Mental Health
It was great to join the Institute of Global Health Innovation and the Grantham Institute's panel on their report into how climate change impacts mental health.

I've witnessed first hand here in Cardiff North the impact of climate trauma on communities following recently flooding in Whitchurch. It's vital we understand how climate trauma takes effect and what support must be in place.

You can read the report here. ([link removed](1).pdf) It highlights the important challenges we face and its recommendations provide a solid base from which government and policy makers should build to improve the health of people and planet.
Queen's Speech: A Wasted Opportunity for Cardiff North
The Queen's Speech was a wasted opportunity and sums up the Prime Minister and his Government:
Always hoping, never delivering.
Heavy on spin, light on action.

The Tories' plan doesn't deliver for Cardiff North and I spoke about this in the Queen's Speech Debate recently.

End Abuse of Retail Workers

On Monday 7th June I'll be responding on behalf of Labour to a Westminster Hall debate on protecting retail workers from abuse. The UK Government has proposed increasing sentences for those who attack frontline workers, but Labour wants this Bill to go further and protect retail workers too.

Since Covid, there has been a 76% rise in abuse retail workers face. I hope that the UK Government will work with Labour, the Unions and the retail sector to protect its workers from abuse.

You can watch the debate live on
Parliament TV here ([link removed]) from 6.15pm.

HMRC Horror

A constituent started receiving demands from HMRC for a tax credit overpayment owed by her former partner from 10 years previous. HMRC would not listen to the constituent and money was deducted from her wages. After I intervened, HMRC apologised and refunded the money with an additional goodwill payment.

Home Office Hassle

Two constituents were waiting for their Leave to Remain. They were unable to be assessed by Student Finance Wales until the Home Office confirmed their eligibility. Their financial situation became critical and following our intervention, the Home Office provided the necessary information that enabled Student Finance to transfer the funds. The family have subsequently been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.

Points of Light Award

It was great to see constituent Paula Massey receive Downing Street's Points of Light award for her charitable contributions to society. Read more about the important work Paula undertakeshere. ([link removed])

Calls for 20mph on Fishguard Rd

Julie and I are very pleased that Cardiff Council has agreed to participate in a pilot scheme with a 20mph limit imposed on an area. Julie and I worked with local residents to introduce a No Access sign at Fishguard Road to deter through traffic. We're now calling on Cardiff Council alongside local residents, to include Fishgaurd Road in the Council's 20mph pilot.

I'm looking for an experienced Office Manager to work with me and my fantastic team in my Cardiff North Office. For more information and how to apply, click here. ([link removed])
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
