John,

In service of the Big Lie, GOP-led legislatures in Texas and across the country are trying to take us back to a different time when not every American had their voice heard in our democracy.

Here in Texas, Republicans tried to pass a series of voting rights restrictions known as Senate Bill 7. Fortunately, Democrats in the state legislature were able to block the bill for the time being, but Texas and other GOP-led states are still pushing sweeping attacks on voting rights.

That’s why I believe we must urgently address these attacks to protect our democracy. Do you agree we must act now and pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the right to vote?

Yes, of course! >> [link removed]
No, I don’t. >> [link removed]

Before I was elected to Congress, I was a voting rights attorney, so I know exactly what these laws are designed to do. Almost every provision in SB 7 had something in it that was clearly and intentionally racially discriminatory. The most egregious example -- making the early voting window from 1 to 9pm on Sunday -- was blatantly designed to target Souls to the Polls, a longstanding tradition in the Black community.

I’m reminded that on this day, in 1919, the U.S. Senate passed the 19th Amendment which expanded voting rights to all Americans regardless of their gender. Hindsight gives the illusion that this victory was inevitable, but it happened thanks to the tireless work of activists like Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, and so many others.

And our work to ensure that every American has their voice heard at the polls is far from complete. That’s why I believe now is the time to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Do you agree we must urgently pass these bills to protect the sacred right to vote?
