GOP lawmakers are attacking our right to demand justice because they know that when we come together and raise our voices, we win.

John, you can learn a lot about someone based on what they fight for.

Just look at last summer: In response to the state-sanctioned murder of Black people, millions of folks like you took to the streets to demand justice — powering the largest movement in U.S. history.1

Our direct action started a national conversation on police accountability and racial justice, removed Trump from office, and led to charges for the cop who murdered George Floyd.

While we fought to dismantle white supremacy, others fought to uphold it. In January, a violent mob of white supremacists attacked the U.S. Capitol. They tried to kill lawmakers, silence our voices, and overturn Black votes. They failed.

Now, Republican officials are protecting the violent white supremacists — and lashing out against Black protesters fighting for our lives. Last week, Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection. At the same time, GOP lawmakers in 34 states have introduced 81 new punitive anti-protest bills to take away our right to protest injustice — putting a target on the back of Black activists.2

Color Of Change is fighting to strike down these anti-protest bills, but we need your help. Can we count on you to power the campaign to protect our right to protest, John?

With your help, Color Of Change has already fought GOP efforts to cover up and downplay the Capitol insurrection. We’re calling out corporations that donate to insurrectionist politicians,3 and we've demanded investigations into white supremacist infiltration of Capitol Police.4

But our campaign to protect the right to protest is a nationwide movement. Here’s a snapshot of what we’re up against:

  • In Florida — ground zero for anti-protest bills — Governor DeSantis has signed sweeping anti-protest legislation that criminalizes protest and increases criminal penalties for taking down Confederate monuments.5
  • Republican legislators in Florida, Oklahoma, and Iowa have already passed bills to protect drivers who attempt to murder protesters with their cars.6
  • In Minnesota, anyone convicted of “unlawful protesting” would not be able to receive student loans, unemployment benefits, or housing assistance.7

Make no mistake, John: Lawmakers are attacking our right to demand justice because they know that when we come together and raise our voices, we win.

They know that direct action gets the goods. They’re scared a Black-led multiracial coalition could dismantle the white supremacist status quo that keeps them in power.

They’re right. We will win. But our fight for justice is far from over.

The next step is organizing to protect our right to protest — demanding action from elected officials, supporting Black organizers on the ground in key states, and spreading the word about these dangerous bills online.
