It’s been nearly 5 months since Donald Trump provoked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building. In the wake of the catastrophic attempted coup that took the lives of 5 people, Facebook suspended Trump’s accounts for his “use of [the] platform to incite violent insurrection.”
But any day now, Mark Zuckerberg could reinstate Trump’s accounts on Facebook. Our message to him is simple: One insurrection is one too many. Don’t help him do it again.
Check out our full-page ad in The New York Times today that demands Facebook keep Donald Trump off the platform permanently:
We don’t want to even imagine Facebook reinstating Trump. We’ve lived through the trauma of his influence on Facebook. No amount of ad dollars can justify giving him back his megaphone for violent extremism, disinformation, hate, and discrimination.
Our partners at Media Matters reviewed all of Trump’s Facebook posts last year and found more than 1,400 of them contained COVID-19 misinformation, election lies, or extreme rhetoric about his critics -- and he has continued to spew those dangerous falsehoods regularly since January 6th. So how can anyone say he won’t just pick up where he left off if he’s allowed back on Facebook?
If Facebook reinstates Trump, they will be actively and knowingly putting American lives and democracy at risk. That’s why we’re sending a strong and clear message today to Mark Zuckerberg: Keep Trump off Facebook.
We appreciate your support in this critical moment,
