Delivering for the Cedar Rapids Community

As a former member of the Iowa National Guard, I vividly remember being on the ground in the Cedar Rapids community over 10 years ago to respond to the devastation caused by the record-breaking flooding.

This experience led me to make securing federal resources for the city’s flood mitigation project one of my top priorities when I first entered the U.S. Senate.

Following years of hard work and collaboration from city leaders, the local business community, the state, and our Iowa Congressional delegation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designated $117 million to the Cedar Rapids flood mitigation project.

Since the disastrous flooding, the City of Cedar Rapids has worked tirelessly to develop and advance the flood mitigation project. This week, as we broke ground on the 16th Avenue SE Floodgate, we celebrated the resilience of the Cedar Rapids community and the beginning of permanent flood protection for this great city.

This project will not only protect the city, but also give businesses the certainty they need to confidently invest in the Cedar Rapids community.

I’m honored to be able to fight for Iowans day in and day out in the Senate. Yesterday’s groundbreaking is just one example of what we can achieve when we work together—at the local, state, and federal level—to put Iowa first and deliver for our communities.
