June 10: San Francisco And The Future of Regional Transit

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is responsible for planning, financing and coordinating transportation for 27 different transit agencies around the Bay Area, including Muni and BART here in San Francisco.

Come learn from two experts on how regional transit decisions are made and how San Franciscans can make sure their voices are heard.

We'll be talking with Tilly Chang, Executive Director of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA), and Nick Josefowitz, Vice Chair of the MTC and Chief Policy Officer at SPUR.

Speak Up! June 9 Tell the MTC to Restore Full Service

May 6 action at MTC offices

We have an opportunity to impact the the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's (MTC) work on regional transit recovery. Coming on the heels of the action we co-sponsored (above), the MTC is holding a workshop with transit agencies from the region about their service plans, financial status, and other transit recovery plans. Have they restored full service? What are their plans to do so, and to get through the coming years?

This is a chance for transit riders - like you! - to speak up for restoring full service as soon as possible. Sign up below so we can keep you updated on details, provide you with talking points, and send you a reminder email the day of.

Recap: Transit Recovery with Director Kirschbaum

SFMTA has been making changes to Muni service practically on the fly for the past year, in an effort to provide as much service as possible to the places and riders who need it most, while balancing serious resource constraints.

The upcoming August service change will see the return of a lot of service, which is possible as COVID restrictions are lifted. The service change also represents a shift back to a more organized roll-out of such changes, including returning more control to bus and train operators over their routes and shifts.

While a lot of connections and routes will be restored, there is still a long way to go to full service. Catch up with Transit Director Julie Kirschbaum as she explains the constraints and challenges she's balancing. Our members asked excellent questions and Director Kirschbaum worked hard to respond directly and honestly to all of them (including staying after to read through everyone's chats and questions). Catch up with our summary or watch the full video for all the details.

Carnaval - Reaching Riders in Person

We had a great time getting out and meeting riders *in person* at this year's Carnaval 2-day resource fair in the Mission.

While we heard a lot of different voices from around the city, we specifically heard from Mission riders that were pretty happy with their service - and no wonder, with the resources SFMTA has dedicated to the Mission corridor. Mission buses have had some of the highest ridership throughout the pandemic.

We collected over 200 surveys to help us better understand and advocate for people's needs. Hundreds of attendees enthusiastically told our team about the many transit issues and successes they encounter. These in-person conversations always reaffirm the need for our strong rider advocacy.

Thanks so much to our awesome volunteers who made it all possible! Thank you Sue, Thea, Matt, Priya, Paul, Dominique, Cyrus, Reanna, and Laura! These individuals braved the mix of howling fog and unrelenting heat to support our work and advocate for transit riders. Cheers to all of them!

Make Mission Street Transit Lanes Permanent!

Mission Street downtown, from 11th Street to 3rd Street, was the first transit-only lane completed by SFMTA under the Temporary Emergency Transit Lanes program, designed to get transit priority on the street quickly to protect Muni and its riders from being stuck in traffic as car usage returned.

It's now time to make these improvements permanent. Whereas Muni is at 30% of pre-pandemic ridership systemwide, the Mission corridor is at 70%. We need our buses permanently protected from traffic to keep people moving efficiently and reliably.

Sign up below to receive more information, talking points, and updates on when and how to speak up for permanent transit-only lanes on Mission Street.
