When I was elected to Congress last year, I ran against one of the most openly homophobic candidates in New York politics. And while my win was a powerful testament to how far the LGBTQ+ community has come, there is still so much work left to do to secure equality for all.

LGBTQ+ Americans can still be denied housing, employment, and bank loans in dozens of states simply because of who they love or how they identify. And in this year alone, over 225 pieces of anti-LGBTQ legislation have made their way into Republican-held legislatures across the country. 

This Pride month, we should honor the love, accomplishments, and contributions of our LGBTQ community with action and demand that the Senate pass The Equality Act, so that every American has the opportunity to live free from bias and discrimination. For four years, LGBTQ Americans lived under an administration that adopted cruel policies aimed at restricting our access to housing, employment, and economic opportunity. 

And while Donald Trump is no longer in office, the politics of hate and fear are still alive and well — and we need to do everything in our power to secure rights for LGBTQ+ Americans.
