The Republican Party knows that its future success doesn't depend on policies or principles that help the average American live a better life -- their future depends on suppressing the vote and rigging the system to win elections while a shrinking minority of the country supports them.
So it comes as no surprise that last month Senate Republicans led by Mitch McConnell launched an all-out assault on the For the People Act. Sen. McConnell is using Senate procedural rules to slow down the bill, hoping that Democrats might give up eventually.
Mitch McConnell and his Senate allies know that if this bill becomes law, it could be the death knell to the Republican Party's voter suppression. We cannot let the Senate Grim Reaper kill this bill.
This is one of the darkest moments in recent memory for voting rights in America. All across the country, Republicans are introducing bills to make it harder for people to vote and make it easier for the GOP to maintain control without a majority of voters supporting them. We need Democrats at the federal level to step in and protect the democratic foundations of our country.
That's why the For the People Act is one of our top priorities this Congress. It will fundamentally change our system of elections and allow more Americans to participate in our democracy. Democrats believe in an America that works for everybody, and this bill is a vital step towards that dream.
We need to show our support for the For the People Act. If you believe that Democrats need to do everything in their power to fight for our democracy, we'd like to hear from you tonight. Every day that we don't pass the For the People Act is another day that radical, authoritarian Republicans are rigging the next election in their favor.
