A military coup to overthrow President Biden?! That’s what was proposed by Trump crony and disgraced General Michael Flynn at a QAnon conference over Memorial Day weekend.[1]
When asked why a military-style coup – such as the one that recently took place in Myanmar – couldn’t happen here, Flynn responded “No reason… it should happen here […] that’s right.” A former U.S. Army General endorsing a military coup to overturn the results of a free and fair election is a dangerous threat to our democracy and should NOT be taken lightly!
This isn’t the first time Michael Flynn suggested military action to block the will of The People. In December of last year Flynn, and Trump’s former Big Lie lawyer, Sidney Powell, urged then-President Trump to declare martial law so that they could “rerun” elections in states where Trump lost to President Joe Biden.[2]
Flynn’s flirtations with fascism are nothing new – and his recent comments may border on sedition. The American people should not pay be paying the pension of a disgraced retired general who is endorsing the overthrow of the U.S. government by the military. It’s extremely dangerous rhetoric aimed at an audience that has already proven they are willing to act with violence – as witnessed during the January 6 insurrection.
The dangerous delusions don’t stop there. According to recent reporting from People For’s Right Wing Watch, former President Trump is allegedly telling those close to him that he “expects to be reinstated as president by August” – a claim that was echoed by Powell during the QAnon conference and was received with raucous cheers from the audience.
Trump may no longer be in office, but his operatives and supporters are still just as energized and motivated as they’ve ever been – and the danger they pose to our democracy cannot be ignored. Michael Flynn must be held to account for his inflammatory rhetoric that seeks to overturn our elections and undermine our democracy.
