| Friend, There were 663,367 arrests for a marijuana law violation across the United States in 2018. This is the second year in a row that marijuana arrests have increased, even as more states have legalized adult use. And the vast majority of these arrests are just for simple marijuana possession. It’s clear. Despite the progress we’ve made together – marijuana is now legal in 11 states – outdated drug war extremists are still intent on criminalizing us for personal drug use and possession. This senseless drug war is unrelenting. To fight it, you must be unrelenting too. As someone who knows the drug war must end, you understand this increase in arrests is extremely problematic. Two thirds of Americans support legalizing marijuana. Yet police departments across the country continue to waste valuable time and money arresting people for marijuana law violations. We are fighting the criminalization of marijuana in the places hardest hit by the war on drugs. Places like New York, where there have been 800,000 arrests for simple marijuana possession in the past 20 years. And in the South, where many people suffering from illness cannot legally access the medicine that works best for them. But we can’t do it alone. The most comprehensive marijuana bill ever introduced, the MORE Act would de-schedule marijuana at the federal level, use tax revenue from the marijuana industry to reinvest in impacted communities, and support equitable licensing. It would also prevent deportation and provide for federal resentencing and expungement for marijuana cases. Friend, marijuana arrests are the single most arrested offense in the United States.
