Friend,

This month marks the 50th anniversary of President Nixon officially declaring a “war on drugs” and we’ve witnessed the immeasurable harm it’s caused for far too long.

The first anti-drug laws originated as a way to target and control Asian, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities. Nixon doubled down and deliberately waged a “war on drugs” to ramp up racial and social oppression. Since then, millions of people have been stigmatized, criminalized, and punished and the drug war has infiltrated every aspect of our society from policing to education to housing to immigration and more.

Drug possession is the most arrested offense in the country. Ending these arrests – by decriminalizing all drugs – is the most critical next step we can take to end the racist drug war.

Sign our petition and join the fight to decriminalize all drugs and dismantle the disastrous drug war.

Decriminalization would end criminal penalties for drug use and possession so that nobody gets arrested, goes to jail or prison, or faces criminal punishment for using or possessing a small amount of a drug for personal use.

Last year, you helped us make history when Oregon became the first state in the nation to decriminalize possession of all drugs and expand access to vital health, harm reduction, and recovery services. That victory proved that treating drug use as a health issue, instead of as a crime, is possible.

For the first time ever, there’s real momentum for decriminalizing all drugs at both the state and federal level and we’re doing everything we can to make that a reality.

Add your name to our petition to help us decriminalize all drugs and fight back against 50 years of the drug war.

An overwhelming majority of the public knows that the war on drugs has failed. Ending it will take time, but right now decriminalizing all drugs is one of the most important steps we can take towards undoing decades of damage.

With your support, DPA is leading the way to end the drug war and build a world without it. As the 50th anniversary of the drug war approaches, please keep standing with us to demand a new way forward with drug laws grounded in autonomy, health, and justice.

Sincerely,

Kassandra Frederique
