Dear Friend, Mitch McConnell has nuked the commission to investigate into the January 6 attack on the Capitol.1 Once again, the House Minority Speaker and Senate Minority Leader caved to the former president and his base—and are sacrificing democracy in the process.2,3 Congress must identify and call out the insurrectionists and their allies. Otherwise, it sends a singular message that McCarthy, Trump, Ted Cruz, and everyone who abetted or is whitewashing the attack on the Capitol won’t be held accountable for their wrongdoing. They are setting the stage for it to all happen again. We’re calling on the House of Representatives to establish a Select Committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection, which can be done without Senate Republicans. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: We need to know what happened—every single detail. We need a government that will turn a spotlight on itself. Demand Progress has been at the forefront of fighting for transparency about the insurrection. We investigated the Capitol Police years before their failures became apparent, pushed to ensure the continuity of Congress so it would be resilient in a national crisis, pushed legislation to ensure transparency around the Department of Justice and independence for Inspectors General, and have been clear in calling the Trump administration an existential threat to democracy. Now we need to make sure the government works as it is supposed to. The House doesn’t have to wait for a bill to pass—and it cannot wait for Republican support. House Democrats alone can establish a Select Committee that has the power to subpoena witnesses and review evidence. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi must establish such a committee.4 She has already let five months go by—and we cannot wait another day. Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy have made it clear that they care more about politics than protecting our democracy, and we need to rally as much grassroots pressure as possible to push for a Select Committee to move the January 6 investigation forward. Will you donate? Yes, I’ll donate to Demand Progress today. Thanks for standing with us. Robert Cruickshank, Sources: 1.
