Amazon Watch's latest report exposes how the world's three largest asset managers profit by funding oil companies that drill in the Amazon rainforest, despite pledges to prioritize climate and Indigenous rights.
The International Energy Association recently published a "roadmap" declaring the need for a "radical" shift in energy sources if we are to stay within the 1.5°C global warming limit laid out in the Paris Agreement. This is significant: there is now mainstream consensus that avoiding climate disaster requires immediately ending all new investment in fossil fuels.
These enormous asset managers play a key role in the fight against climate change and injustice. How they invest their clients' money will have a tremendous impact not only on the lives of frontline communities, but for all of us. We must demand that they prioritize Indigenous peoples, human rights, and the climate.
