Dear John,

June is Pride Month, and I wanted to take a second to reflect on what that means and why it is so important.

It was not that long ago that identifying as LGBTQ+ was considered by too many as something to be ashamed of. Our country has indeed come a long way since that bigotry was widely and commonly accepted.

But we have not rounded the corner yet: LGBTQ+ persons are still subject to ignorance, bigotry, and hate that calls out for our condemnation. Unfortunately, during the previous Administration, LGBTQ+ persons were subject to increased discrimination and saw progress and hard-won rights rolled back.

There are also still concerted efforts by policymakers to enshrine this hatred in law in too many states—and even in Congress. We can’t let that happen. I support the Equality Act and an equal rights amendment to the Constitution to remedy this and safeguard equality.

Pride is about love. It is about loving who we are, and recognizing the struggles and hardships our fellow Americans endured just to be accepted for who they are.

I am proud to be an ally and to stand with the LGBTQ+ community, now and always. If elected to Congress, I will be a fierce champion of equality. Right about now, our country needs more leaders who will stand up and fight for freedom and equality, with justice and opportunity for everyone.
Happy Pride Month!

Respectfully,
-Ike
