John —

54 yea. 35 nay. The nayes have it.

Last week, 35 nay votes was all it took for Senate Republicans to filibuster and kill the bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the Capitol. In a deadlocked 50-50 Senate, the filibuster requires 60 votes to end debate and advance bills forward.

Only in the United States Senate does the minority winning a vote mean democracy is “working.” Enough.

We all know Mitch McConnell will never put the American people over his own political self-interests. We can’t — and shouldn’t — waste more time expecting him to do the right thing. He won’t find compromise. He won’t help pass a progressive agenda. He won’t change.

If we’re going to keep our Democratic majorities in 2022, we need to enact the progress millions of Americans voted for. And in this political climate, we need to abolish the filibuster to do that. It’s long past time that we pass the hundreds of bills collecting dust in Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard that is preventing our country from moving forward.

Republicans jeer that abolishing the filibuster would lead to majority rule – only because they don’t hold it. We know if it was politically expedient for them, they’d switch their stance in a heartbeat. For now, they rule from the minority. And that's not what Americans asked for on November 3rd.

Our progressive agenda has overwhelming public support. We cannot allow an archaic Senate rule to stand in our way as Mitch McConnell and his cronies deny the American people the progress they deserve.

Add your name to my petition telling the Senate: Abolish the filibuster and stop letting Republican minority rule block our progressive agenda. [[link removed]]

If we want to make real progress and move our country forward together, then we need to abolish the filibuster. Now.

This is a defining moment for the future of the Senate and our democracy. We can make them listen. So long as we raise our voices in unison. Thank you as always for your activism.
