John, I’ll keep it quick because we don’t have time to waste. Yesterday, a state Senate committee blindsided everyone by voting down Secretary Delli-Gatti’s nomination by Gov. Cooper to stay as Secretary of Environmental Quality. As one senator put it, this was a “sham process.” We couldn’t agree more. Senators are playing politics to protect polluters instead of people. What else is new? Senate Republicans should be ashamed of their dismissive conduct toward an Air Force veteran who is the first woman to lead North Carolina’s environmental protection agency. Delli-Gatti is an eminently qualified and experienced environmental and energy policymaker for the EPA, state and local governments, and national nonprofits. She has garnered praise across the aisle and by diverse stakeholders for her diplomacy and common-sense leadership, including time as an advisor to North Carolina’s Duke Energy president. North Carolinians deserve a leader like Dionne Delli-Gatti, and we can’t let pro-polluter politicians win.
