Happy Pride Month, friend!

Pride Month wouldn't be possible without courageous Americans who stood up against oppression and brutality in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn. And Pride Month -- and the progress we have to celebrate -- has grown through leaders like State Senator Emily Randall, our state's amazing Speaker of the House Laurie Jinkins, outstanding local leaders like Pierce County Councilman Ryan Mello and Bremerton City Councilman Michael Goodnow, and so many others who are blazing trails and making a difference!

This Pride Month, as long as you're fully vaccinated, it's safe to gather in person for community events to celebrate these leaders, activists, and the entire LGBTQ+ community. The opportunities for engagement are numerous, and I urge you to participate.

But it's important to remember that Pride Month is not just a time for celebration and commemoration. This year especially, it must be a reminder for us to stay vigilant and take action to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2021 is already the worst year in recent history for LGBTQ+ rights. State Legislators across the country have waged an all out attack against transgender youth. Additionally, countless transgender people -- most of them Black women -- face violence and harassment every year.

These hateful and horrific laws and actions have no place in our country, and it's on all of us to fight back. I stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and remain committed to doing everything I can to protect the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ Americans.

This month and every month, I hope you'll join in this fight.

It's an honor to represent you,

Derek
