Abraham Lincoln said this as he grew concerned that he would not be
re-nominated by the Republican Party for President in 1864, instead being
replaced by a candidate who would seek peace. Despite this concern, though,
he knew that the people would look past the lies they were being told and
support what was best for the country.

Since its founding in 1988, [2]Vote Smart has had the same faith in the
American public that President Lincoln expressed when the country was torn
apart by war. If voters are provided with the information that they need to
make an informed choice over who they want to represent them, then America
will be better off.
