‘Woke’ NBA kowtows to Chinese communists

By Dan Hugger • October 9, 2019

Houston vs New Orleans in Beijing during the 2016 Global Games ([link removed] )

The National Basketball Association, a league that has in the past urged its players to speak out on issues of social justice, has issued what can only be described as a craven and cowardly statement distancing itself from the general manager of the Houston Rockets, Daryl Morey, and his since deleted tweet expressing solidarity with protestors in Hong Kong. Morey’s original tweet was denounced by the Houston Rocket’s owner Tilman Fertitta, the communist regime in China, the Chinese Basketball Association, and several Chinese firms which sponsor the Rockets. Morey is perhaps the smartest and certainly the most innovative general manager in the history of the NBA. His original tweet which read, “Fight for Freedom Stand with Hong Kong,” was both as laudable and courageous as his struggle session is both vile and simpering. The Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and the NBA itself demonstrate their fundamental ethical bankruptcy by using their power and privilege to shield a totalitarian regime from even indirect criticism in the form of a tweet expressing solidarity with a courageous protest movement whose only crime is standing up for human rights and the rule of law.

The opioid crisis has affected millions in the US ([link removed] )

In 2017, a poll from NPR and Ipsos found that one in every three people in the U.S. has been affected by the opioid crisis in one way or another. One third of Americans know someone who has overdosed or know someone who is battling addiction -- and the crisis hasn't slowed down. On this episode, AnneMarie Schieber, award winning television news anchor and reporter based in Grand Rapids, MI, dives into the issue and explores how the private sector is responding to the crisis. What are churches and ministries doing to help people free themselves from addiction?

Video: Robert Doar on poverty in America ([link removed] )

In July of this year, Robert Doar officially took the reins as President of the American Enterprise Institute, succeeding friend of Acton Arthur C. Brooks in that role. Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome Doar to deliver an address on poverty in America as part of the 2019 Acton Lecture Series. Doar reviewed the history of welfare reform during and after the Clinton Administration, discussed what works and what doesn’t when trying to help those in poverty to rise toward prosperity, and shared a bit of his personal story to illuminate how he came to be deeply interested in finding solutions to poverty.

Free kids, free society: Overcoming the myths of ‘safetyism’ ([link removed] )

As America’s “great awokening” continues to unfold, we see the emergence of a peculiar new brand of safetyism and self-protectionism. Whether observed in the range of student-led riots and intimidation efforts at college campuses or the fear-mongering of white nationalists, the foundations of liberal democracy are increasingly being called into question—all that a select set of personal beliefs, fears, and anxieties might somehow be appeased. These are the fruits of a culture that overcoddles and overprotects.

Some myths and facts about Saint Francis of Assisi ([link removed] )

October 4th wass the Feast Day of Francis of Assisi. He is surely one of the most famous Christian saints. Francis is rightly characterized as highly influential in shaping Christianity through the West. The numerous Franciscan religious orders inspired by his life and works are ample testament to this. Unfortunately, numerous myths have also been propagated about Francis.

Government funds bring corruption to Mayberry ([link removed] )

Front Royal, Virginia, is just 70 miles from Washington, D.C., by road but a million miles away by culture. One resident described the town, which bills itself as “the northern gateway way to the Shenandoah Valley,” as “sort of like Mayberry.” This author, having visited the city many times, can confirm that description. Federal, state, and local authorities say the town has become victim to tens of millions of dollars in embezzlement and corruption involving more than a dozen county officials.
