The Biden administration is moving to suspend all oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) pending additional review of the environmental impacts of drilling.
John — We have breaking news, and it’s big. The Biden administration is moving to suspend all oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) pending additional review of the environmental impacts of drilling.
The additional review could mean more restrictions on the development of the Arctic Refuge, and could even mean the nullification of scheduled drilling leases altogether. After fighting hard against these leases since the Trump administration tried to sneak them through at the last minute before they left office, this is a chance to save the Arctic Refuge from environmental devastation.
This is a big victory in the fight to protect ANWR, but there’s still more work to be done. This decision to revisit the Trump administration’s rushed environmental analysis of the drilling is only a temporary stoppage, and it doesn’t revoke the drilling leases that were already sold by the Trump administration.
If we don’t step up to the plate and continue fighting for greater protections, one of our country’s most precious environmental regions could be irreversibly damaged. We’re already taking action, but we can’t stop now.
SEEC members are leading the charge to protect ANWR. As a former SEEC member, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland is part of the team working to save the Refuge. And SEEC member Rep. Jared Huffman has introduced legislation that would create long-lasting protection for the Arctic Refuge instead of a temporary fix.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
