Police across the US use racist tech that leads to false arrests of Black
and brown people, terrifying police confrontations and more -- but right
now, there’s a push in New York to ban the use of dangerous facial
recognition software.

If we win in New York, it can pave the way for a national victory.

John,

Facial recognition technology is being used by police across the country,
even though it falsely serves up Black men to police for arrest and
harassment and fuels a surveillance state that affects all of us.

But momentum against the use of this tech is building - just last month
Massachusetts was the first state to pass state-wide restrictions, and now
allies are telling us that New York state is considering banning it.

If we can force a win in a major state like New York, it could pave the
way for national change.

A huge petition from the SumOfUs community can show lawmakers that people
across the country want them to act. When enough of us sign, we’ll take
our call directly to the state capitol.

When it comes to video surveillance and facial recognition, New York City
is one of the worst places you can be. Over 20,000 cameras track New
Yorkers as they transit through the city on a daily basis.

Law enforcement across the country claim that facial recognition makes us
safer. But the algorithms this technology relies on is prone to false
matches. Just last year, a Black man was wrongly arrested and charged due
to a bad facial recognition match.

Now the tide is starting to turn on the need to ban this technology. 20
states are actively considering bills that would restrict or ban this
racist software, and partners in NY say they are very close to tipping the
balance. With your help, we can make sure that happens.

ban facial recognition

Fighting back against state surveillance is at the heart of the SumOfUs
community. Over 87,000 SumOfUS members like you mobilized quickly to force
tech giant Google to stop aiding the government of China in expanding its
state surveillance and censorship systems. Now we need to do all that we
can to put an end to this mass surveillance tool.
