Hello there, we have good news:
Nearly 40 legal scholars sent a letter to Congress explaining the constitutionality of statehood for Washington, D.C. They concluded by saying, “Congress should not avoid exercising its express constitutional authority to admit the Commonwealth into the Union.”
We couldn't agree more.
D.C. has a larger population than two existing states, and its residents pay more in taxes than 21 states. During the Capitol insurrection, D.C.'s mayor couldn't even activate the National Guard -- leaving Capitol police to fend for themselves while Trump ignored calls for backup.
McConnell and the GOP have spent decades denying the American people the political representation they deserve. Whether through voter suppression tactics or by denying over 700,000 American citizens their constitutional rights, Republicans have stayed in power by subverting our democracy.
We know it's going to be an uphill fight for D.C. residents to gain their rightful voice in Congress -- especially when Republicans have the filibuster to block statehood efforts.
But more and more Democrats are getting on board. That's why today, we need to know if our supporters will stand with us in urging Congress to act. Please, let us know now where you stand:
Do you support statehood for D.C.?
Thanks for weighing in today -- it helps us get the most accurate data on where Democrats stand on progressive priorities.
