John -- From extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression schemes to wild conspiracy theories that undermine the public’s confidence in our elections, Republicans have been relentless in their assaults on our democracy. And now they’ve just opened up a new front in their war:
Over the past several years, voters in traditionally conservative states have voted in favor of progressive ballot initiatives only to see their Republican state legislatures and governors work expressly against the wishes of the electorate.
In Missouri, voters passed a ballot initiative in banning partisan gerrymandering only to see it reversed by another Republican-backed initiative two years later. In Florida, voters opted to restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated people who have completed their sentences, only to see the Republican legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis impose a new poll tax on those very same people.
The list goes on. In state after state, GOP policy priorities are consistently rejected by overwhelming majorities of the voters -- and now Republicans are so angry about it that they’re trying to end the practice of ballot initiatives altogether!
It’s just the latest new tactic in Republicans’ war on our democracy, and it’s up to us to fight back and make sure the voters -- not the politicians -- are the ones with the final say.
