On January 6th, by a matter of minutes and yards, we very nearly lost American democracy to white nationalist thuggery. History is replete with would-be tyrants who, when governments don’t hold them to account for their offenses, become full-blown tyrants. We can’t let that be our fate in 2025, as unrepentant Republicans double down on racist despotism nationwide.
For there to be a “de-Trumpification” of America, we need Congress to fulfill its oath of office and act righteously and swiftly on this existential emergency. We need our Congresspeople to get out the whole truth of what happened to the public, and we need them to refer the orchestrators of the coup attempt—especially the highest-ranking perpetrators—to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
The stated purpose of the January 6th terrorist attack on the Capitol was to “Stop The Steal” and prevent Congress from certifying President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. That constitutes the crime of “insurrection.” Republican members of Congress who incited, aided, or abetted that insurrection violated the 14th Amendment and should be expelled, or at the very least prevented from running for public office again. But instead, sitting Members of Congress have been doing their best to minimize the scope and intent of the attack.
Senate Republicans defeated the proposal for a January 6th Commission with a filibuster despite a vote of 35 opposed to 54 in favor. As citizens, we are glad the commission was defeated because its proposed rules would have allowed Republican members (many of whom were complicit in promoting The Big Lie) to block subpoenas from being issued, establish an artificial timeline, and prevent any report from ever being made public.
Now, it’s time for our Congresspeople to get serious, fully investigate the events of January 6th, and hold those responsible to account. This starts with Speaker Pelosi forming a Select Committee with a Democratic majority, the power to subpoena anyone, and no compromises.
Tell Speaker Pelosi: ([link removed]) It’s time to form a resolute Select Committee with a Democratic majority to investigate the January 6th insurrection, with strict rules on membership, tough subpoena power, public transparency, and no artificial end date.
** We need bold action to invest in American families!
------------------------------------------------------------
Even as we fight for a serious investigation of the January 6th insurrection, we can’t lose sight of the urgent needs of the American people. President Biden and Democratic Members of Congress have been wasting precious time trying to compromise with Republicans on infrastructure, taxation, and more—even though Senator McConnell has already sworn that Republicans will never allow a Biden proposal to pass. Attempts at bipartisanship are pointless. At a time when so many people’s lives are financially precarious, we need our Members of Congress to use their majority to pass big, bold, green infrastructure plans that invest in America’s future and working class families. And they shouldn’t be afraid to fund those plans by requiring corporations and the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes.
Tell your Members of Congress: ([link removed]) Stop wasting time on go-nowhere attempts to compromise with Republicans and pass a bold plan to invest in American families!
