Village of Oswego completes replacement of lead service lines

"In a state plagued with lead lines, Village water system now lead-free"

Lead service line

The Village of Oswego has completed its lead service line replacement and is pleased to declare the Village?s water supply system lead-free ahead of its initially planned timeline.

Lead was a common material for water pipes from ancient times until the middle of the 20th century, when it was phased out because of health concerns. Lead exposure can cause neurological illnesses, especially in young children, including slower growth and cognitive issues.

Construction with lead piping was phased out in Illinois later than many other states, and there are still more lead pipes throughout Illinois than in any other state. Replacing the lines can be expensive, and because service lines connect from the utility directly to homes replacement requires the cooperation of municipalities and private property owners.

As part of the Village?s water meter replacement program, staff inspected water service lines to identify those made of lead and tag them for replacement. When just five such lead service lines were discovered in Oswego, the Oswego Village Board authorized the replacement of the lines at no cost to residents.

With the water meter replacement program nearing completion, Village staff believe that all lead service and main lines in the Village have likely been eliminated.

?Safe, lead-free drinking water is critical to our community, and especially because of the potential harm lead poses to our children,? Village President Troy Parlier said. ?I am proud that Oswego has taken initiative on this issue well ahead of the state to ensure the health and safety of our residents.?

The total cost for lead service line replacement was about $116,000, paid from the Village?s water capital fund.
