"Whether in Minneapolis, New Orleans, Chicago, or Standing Rock, communities that are overpoliced are also the same communities that are overburdened by toxic pollution,” says Leslie Fields, the Sierra Club’s National Director of Policy, Advocacy, and Legal. “Those communities are suffering from a syndemic—many epidemics happening all at once—as they grapple with the threat multiplier of racial injustice.”

“Ford holds an important place in our economy and our collective imagination,” says Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. “That's why it was such a big deal when the company unveiled a new all-electric version of its pickup, the F-150 Lightning, to be manufactured using union labor. As an archetypal American automaker, Ford could spark a major shift in public perception of electric vehicles."

Right now, President Biden and Congress are negotiating the details of the upcoming infrastructure plan—a bold, sweeping proposal to invest in critical infrastructure, address the climate crisis and racial injustice, and create family-sustaining jobs. Their decisions will decide how trillions of dollars are spent, and will shape our society and economy for decades to come. Let’s fill congressional mailboxes with letters saying now is not the time to scale down our ambition—it's time to go all in.

To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we asked Sierra Club staff to share the tools, practices, and sources of inspiration they use to take care of their mental health while fighting the climate crisis.

"I was raised by a wise and kind man who taught me about our place in time and on this planet, and our role in it all,” reflects Christian Gerlach, an organizer for the Sierra Club’s Our Wild America campaign. “I learned at a young age that we borrow resources from future generations, and for that reason we need to be good stewards of the land."

Newly passed laws in Montana and Idaho could reduce the states’ wolf populations by at least 80 percent. “They're taking us back 100 years to when wolves were driven to near extinction,” says Sierra Club wildlife specialist Bonnie Rice. The Sierra Club has joined the Center For Biological Diversity and the Humane Society in calling for an emergency reinstatement of Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.

As environmental and social justice movements grow more powerful, the right-wing effort to criminalize dissent and protest continues to gain momentum. Fifteen states have passed bills criminalizing environmental protests since 2017, and according to the American Civil Liberties Union, nearly 100 anti-protest bills were introduced in 36 states in the past year alone.

"We can no longer position worried moms as the front line of defense between their child’s health and the chemical industry,” writes Sierra Club toxics advisor Sonya Lunder in the latest issue of Ms. magazine. “We need a government that regulates chemicals."
"It's time to end the use of toxic chemicals that harm our health." |

Studies show that spending even 20 minutes in a local park helps kids concentrate better in school. But not everyone has easy access to a local park, let alone further-afield destinations like national parks. The Transit to Trails Act (H.R. 2924 and S. 1461) will make it easier for people to reach public lands via public transportation, expanding access to the outdoors for people in nature-deprived communities.

Today is the first day of Pride Month, when we celebrate how far we've come and recognize how far we have to go. In 2021 alone, legislators have introduced over 100 anti-trans bills in 38 states, and LGBTQI+ rights continue to be attacked across the nation. That's why it's so important to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Will you ask your senators to pass the Equality Act and ensure everyone has the chance to thrive? |
