This weekend, Democratic lawmakers in Texas defeated an extreme Republican
voter suppression bill -- for now -- by walking out en masse and
preventing a vote minutes before a crucial deadline.
At a news conference afterwards, one of the Dems told reporters, "The
message is very, very clear: Mr. President, we need a national response to
federal voting rights." Another added "We did our part. Now we need
Congress to do their part."
[ [link removed] ]SIGN ON TO TELL CONGRESS: I support eliminating the filibuster and
passing the For The People Act -- a federal law that will override racist
state voter suppression laws and protect our democracy. We're keeping our
allies in Congress informed as tens of thousands more people sign.
Another lawmaker who walked out told the Washington Post the action the
Democrats took, "is about the equivalent of crawling on our knees begging
the president and the United States Congress to give us the For the People
Act and give us the John Lewis Voting Rights Act."
Yet another, making the case on Twitter and not mincing words, said,
"Federal lawmakers need to get their s--- together and pass the For The
People Act."
The For The People Act is a sweeping bill that would override racist,
state-level voter suppression laws and crack down on partisan
gerrymandering and the outsized impact of big money in politics. It will
modernize our voting systems and dismantle barriers erected to keep Black,
Indigenous, young, and new Americans from voting.
And in fact, the House already has passed the For The People Act.
The bill has been stuck in the Senate because even though 49 of the 50
Democratic senators support it -- and the 50th Democratic senator has made
clear we must pass a bill to expand voting rights and end state voter
suppression laws, which is the For The People Act does.
With Vice President Kamala Harris casting a tie-breaker, Dems have the
majority they need to pass the For The People Act and protect our
democracy. But to overcome a certain Republican filibuster, Dems need 60
votes.
