Listen, we need a gut check on the bigger picture in American politics. We've written to you a lot about the individual attacks the Republican Party has launched on our democratic institutions -- but there is a larger, troubling pattern here.

The Republican Party is walking down a path that will end our democracy as we know it -- the sooner Democrats acknowledge that, the sooner we can deal with this unprecedented challenge.

In every corner of the United States, there are radical, far-right Republicans dedicated to anti-democratic policies like packing our courts with conservative judges and making it effectively impossible for people to vote.

Donald Trump spent his entire administration playing political games with our Justice Department and seeking to punish political enemies. Every step of the way, he had extremist Republican allies helping him and others who looked the other way.

When we say 2022 is one of the most important elections in our lifetimes, it's because unfortunately, it is a dire threat to our democracy to allow Republicans to hold any power until they agree to once again respect the principles that America was founded on. The stakes could not be higher.
