John,
During the 2020 elections, President Biden campaigned on canceling $10,000 of student loan debt for every borrower.
Even though President Biden supported some form of student loan forgiveness during the 2020 campaign, it is not part of the recent annual White House budget and he still has not used his executive authority to cancel student debt.
No one should be shackled with debt for pursuing an education. We must invest in making sure that every American receives a quality education and has the opportunity to succeed.
President Biden must use his executive power to forgive the $1.71 trillion in student loan debt that 44.7 million Americans owe.
That’s why we're working together to demand action now. Will you sign on to our petition calling on President Biden to cancel student debt now?
In April, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona joined Senator Elizabeth Warren to discuss student debt forgiveness.
Then in May, President Biden named Richard Cordray, a close ally of Senator Elizabeth Warren, and the first director of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau during the Obama administration, the head of Federal Student Aid.
While we know that President Biden has asked both the Department of Justice and the Secretary of Education to outline the legal authority that would allow him to cancel student loan debt up to $50,000 per person, he still hasn't taken action.
This system is hurting entire generations of Americans and it’s never going to change unless we make it.
It is morally unacceptable and unconscionable for the U.S. government to profit by making Americans -- especially those who are struggling to make ends meet -- go into deeper debt.
Stand with DFA and Elizabeth Warren as we push to cancel student loan debt. The more support we build, the greater the pressure on President Biden to act and make it reality.
President Biden has the authority to cancel student debt with the stroke of the pen.
Let’s make it happen,
— Tre
