A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...

** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Last week I wrote about the Memorial Days in Northville over time. This past Saturday, I met with some local volunteers and Scouts from Troop 755 that were placing flags on the final resting sites of our fallen warriors. On Memorial Day, it was my great honor & privilege to speak at the VFW Veterans Memorial remembrance gathering at Rural Hill where a trumpeter played “Taps,” the VFW soldiers rang out a 21-gun salute, poems were read, and the Northville Choir sang patriotic songs. Afterwards, we joined Vets & families at the VFW Hall.
Since childhood, this remembrance gathering (going on 70 years) was always the most important time of the entire Memorial Day weekend for my family and me. Over the next few weeks, I will write about patriotism, starting with an in-depth look at the history of our Northville American Legion. We will explore our community’s connection to the “Arsenal of Democracy”, our local “Rosie the Riveters” that helped win WWII, and we will conclude with 4^th of July events over time.
But first, let’s look at the COVID updates (growing ever shorter) …
* ‘Vacc To Normal’ plan – As of June 1, capacity limits were lifted for outdoor events. Additionally, indoor capacity limits & restrictions were eased allowing indoor gatherings, including weddings & funerals. As of July 1, the state will no longer limit any capacity at indoor or outdoor gatherings, and all restrictions will be lifted. (Michigan.gov)
* Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is safe and highly effective in children ages 12 to 17, the company said Tuesday (May 25). It would be the second COVID-19 vaccine available for this age group if it is authorized for use, in addition to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. (NBC News)

COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES: Northville has had 260 cases/8 fatalities, Township 2215/51, Michigan 990K/20K, Nation 33M/601K, Global 171M/3.6M. (CDC.com)
In the first of this series on Patriotism in Northville, we will look at the Northville American Legion.
* LOOKING BACK TO 1918, the Northville Record published a story on Northvillian Lloyd Green, a young communications courier and casualty of the Great War (WWI) who paid the ultimate price for our liberty and humanity. His final resting place is in the center of Rural Hill’s Veterans Memorial section (where the Memorial Day ceremony was held). Our American Legion post is named in his honor and was founded more than 100 years ago.
* Historically, the Legion met in various locations, including 341 E. Main (next to The Early Bird), a building that was owned by Henry Ford and is presently being renovated. Originally “the want” was to establish a "Memorial Hall" that would assist returning veterans and serve as a community center.
* The present location on Dunlap & Center St. (a historic Dunlap family home) was purchased in 1942. The structure was rotated, a basement added, and the building was covered with brick. For many years, the American Legion post served as a social center for the community as well as barrack apartments for returning vets, supporting its commitment to the principles of service, justice, freedom, and democracy.
* The American Legion Boys State program was started in Illinois in 1935 and came to Michigan in 1938. Our Northville Post has historically sponsored young men & women to attend Boys & Girl State activities. I was fortunate to be sponsored by the American Legion and attended Boys State at MSU in 1978. This program has given Northville students great opportunities to understand how government is run in this country, the state, and the municipality by participating in mock government exercises. Delegates learn firsthand about leadership, practical citizenship and the democratic process through activities that include legislative sessions and court proceedings. “DEMOCRACY IS A VERB, NOT A NOUN.”
* Additionally, the 3-inch Mauser cannon (WWII relic) took up permanent residence on the front lawn of the American Legion over 50 years ago … a gift from the Redford Township American Legion.

NOTE: THERE WILL BE A FOURTH OF JULY PARADE in Northville on Monday, July 5^th at 10:00 AM, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce (additional details to follow in the coming weeks).
Enjoy the freedoms that we have in this country. We all stand on the shoulders of those that have come before us, and it is up to each of us to leave this place better than we found it. Remember to share your time and talents with others you encounter daily… especially around “THE VILLE”. Let’s continue to spread HOPE for a better tomorrow.

P.S. The 2^nd annual “Graduation Parade” honoring all the 2021 NHS Grads will promenade down 6 Mile Saturday afternoon. If you’re in the area, honk your horn and support these young leaders of the future.

Keep that Northville Faith & Let’s move forward together!

Stay #NorthvilleStrong!
