‌ ‌We can’t rely on Big Tech to regulate themselves, friends -- they need real regulation and accountability. And that’s exactly why Accountable Tech stepped up to create a global coalition of 50 organizations to demand a ban on surveillance advertising.

“Surveillance advertising” sounds scary, but what does it actually mean? What would banning it do? Why is this our priority right now? Let’s start with a quick definition:

Surveillance advertising is the practice of extensively tracking and profiling individuals and groups, and then microtargeting ads at them based on their behavioral history, relationships, and identity.

We want to make sure you know all there is to know about surveillance advertising -- and we want to answer any questions you might have. Respond to this email with your questions, and we’ll get back to you soon.

We’ll circle back to this email with some of your Frequently Asked Questions, too, just to make sure you have all the information on what surveillance advertising is and how we’re fighting to ban it.

Social media giants turn massive profits by tracking and profiling us, and then using that information to keep us hooked by serving us “personalized” ads. They’re manipulating information they’ve collected on us -- and boosting false and divisive content -- to maximize engagement and profits. So let’s arm ourselves with the information we need to stop them NOW.

We can’t wait to hear from you.

Talk soon,

The Accountable Tech Team
