On Mayor Faulconer's growing momentum in the recall:
Meanwhile, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer — the only other high-profile Republican running in the Gavin Newsom recall election — had a pretty good month by most standards.
He unveiled a middle class tax cut plan he touted as "the largest middle class tax cut" in the history of California, avoided negative headlines and drew high praise during an appearance on "Ruthless," a popular conservative podcast that regularly features prominent Republican politicians. Jenner pulled a no-show on the podcast a week prior.
"We need serious people to fight what the left is up to and as soon as we sort of made that statement, we had a whole bunch of people in California reach out to us to say, 'Have you checked out Mayor Kevin Faulconer?'" said podcast co-host Josh Holmes, former chief of staff to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "Because this might be the guy."
On how Mayor Faulconer has set himself apart from other candidates:
When compared with Cox and Jenner, Faulconer has been decidedly serious. The mayor's "Ruthless" appearance could help him consolidate support among California Republicans, and Faulconer likes to highlight the fact that San Diego's voter registration statistics (only 25% of registered voters are Republicans, the rest are Democrats or independents) line up with the statewide stats...
However, Dr. Isaac Hale, a lecturer in political science at UC Davis, said that if Faulconer — who was elected twice in Democratic San Diego and has a history of bipartisanship — emerges as the likely replacement, it could possibly alter voters' thinking when they vote on the first question of whether to recall Newsom.

"Potentially," Hale said when asked if Faulconer's rise could kneecap the Newsom team's talking points that voting "yes" on the recall would give way to a Republican in the mold of Donald Trump, who is highly unpopular in California. "If you're the Newsom campaign, you're really happy right now to see recall support divided among four Republicans, especially when one of them is Faulconer, who styles himself as a moderate and can appeal to independents and Democrats. And the theatrics of Cox and Jenner aid his talking points.
On the challenges facing Newsom this summer:
Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Times published a story highlighting the threat fire/power outage season poses to Newsom's political fortunes.
"It could be a major issue,” Republican strategist Dave Gilliard told the LA Times. “People will ultimately hold him responsible for the state of California, and if they can’t turn their lights on right around the time they’re voting, they’re going to be thinking about that.”
