“Texas Gov Threatens To Defund Legislature After Dems Block Voter Suppression Bill”
— The Huffington Post

I want to start with a simple but heartfelt “thank you!”. With your support, we were able to reach our May fundraising goal over the weekend. Goals like these are critical to making sure we have what it takes to build a winning campaign and protect our Democratic majority in 2022. We couldn’t do it without you!

I also wanted to make sure that you saw what happened in Texas over the weekend where Republican Governor Greg Abbott is now threatening to block the salaries of Democratic legislators who refuse to step aside and let a dangerous voter suppression bill pass.

This escalation is outrageous, but not surprising. In states like Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida and elsewhere where Democratic voting numbers are going up, Republicans are making it crystal clear — they will do ANYTHING to hold onto power.

Known as SB 7, this Texas legislation would limit early voting hours and vote-by-mail, as well as ban Sunday voting before 1pm -- a provision targeting Black voters who participate in the “Souls to the Polls” tradition of casting their votes right after Sunday services.

Thanks to the efforts of these Democratic lawmakers, SB 7 passage was blocked on Sunday when lawmakers walked out to prevent the necessary quorum of 100 legislators needed to conduct business. But Gov. Greg Abbott has now announced plans to call a new special legislative session to force the bill through — and pledged to defund the salaries of legislators who try to block the process by not showing up.

There are 75 weeks between now and the November 8, 2022 election — and every one of them is going to be critical as we push back on this GOP voter suppression campaign and work to protect the right to vote and our democratic system.

Passing the For The People Act is vital to stopping this assault on our democracy. It will take sustained and determined grassroots activism and mobilization to get this legislation passed in the Senate. I will continue doing everything in my power to get this done.

Thank you for being part of this fight to save our democracy!

Onwards,

Chris
